Sinopsis de Necropolis and funerary world in rural areas de LABORATORI D'ARQUEOLOGIA DE LA UDG:

Number 9 of the Studies on the Rural World in the Roman Period series is dedicated to necropolises and funerary world. Specifically, the volume comprises 10 contributions geographically focused in the south of Gaul to the north of Spain. The first one of the works is dedicated to the real funeral in the Ager Tarraconensis and is signed by Judit Ciurana Prats and Josep Maria Macias. In this study, the authors collected the main characteristics of the funeral activities in Ager Tarraconesis between the 1st and 7th centuries. It details the main regions of this area and the evolution of funeral rituals. The second contribution made by Jordi Roig Buxo is dedicated to necropolises, artefacts and abnormal human deposits in the non-funerary structures in the territoria of Barcino and Egara between the 4th and 8th centuries. The work places a special emphasis on studying the population that corresponds to a set of extra-cemeterial burials and abnormal deposits made in non-funerary structures such as silos or wells. Continuing with the territory of Tarraconensis, the third contribution to the volume is signed by Lluis Palahi and David Vivo, and it focuses on the rural cemeteries of the suburban area of Gerunda. The work analyses, from the funerary perspective, the profound changes that affected the territory between the Republican period and the Late Roman Empire. The fourth study focuses on the analysis of the necropolis known by the name Carpenters Vineyard, linked to the Roman villa of Tolegassos, which was part of the suburban area of Emporiae. The information obtained in this study allows us to reconstruct the funerary customs of the area, the structure, the conditions of life and the work of a large family group who took care of a farm. Following the fifth article, the volume jumps onto a new territory. The article signed by Javier Andreu Pintado analyses funerals that took place in rural areas in the region of Cinco Villas, in the Central Pre-Pyrenean area. Specifically, they analyse the predominant types of funerary monuments of the Roman villas in that area during the Early Roman Empire era and they compare these to the Late Antiquity Period. The following contribution is dedicated to the study of reuse of Roman villas as places of burials in the Late Antiquity Period in the northern half of the Peninsula and the author is Leticia Tobalina Pulido. With the sixth article, we move on to the Pyrenees. The first article of this new territorial area under study is devoted to an inventory of graves and cemeteries linked to rural aristocratic residences from the beginnings of the Roman Empire in the Early and Late Antiquity periods. The author is Sebastien Cabes. The following contribution on rural Gaul is made by Valerie Bel and focuses on the study of various funerary forms and their integration into the network of settlements and the occupation of Central Languedoc between the 1st and 3rd centuries AC. Jerome Hernandez provides a study on the implementation of the funerary spaces between 3rd and 8th centuries in Languedoc-Roussillon. Finally, Camille Sneed-Verfaillie studies the landscape, organisation and management of joint funerals between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages from various sites listed with the names of graves or groups of isolated graves. In short, the works as a whole provide a novel and complex vision that certainly contributes to improving the understanding of the Roman countryside.El numero 9 de la serie Studies on the Rural World in the Roman Period s'ha dedicat a les necropolis i mon funerari.
